"Chuck Close has developed a formal analysis and methodological reconfiguration of the human face that has radically changed the definition of modern portraiture. The artist's rigorously systematic approach and often visibly gridded formats more nearly approximate those of the minimal and process artists who emerged alongside him in the late 1960s. Close's paintings have become recognised for their monumentality, familiar template and meticulous attention to detail. Each work develops from a head and shoulders photograph of the subject. From here Close has worked through a myriad of techniques and self imposed rules with which to depict the human face, ranging from his earlier "photo realist" paintings to his grid paintings with each segment painstakingly painted with an abstract shape or motif."
