To me, this watch is highly underrated. My eye is caught first by the Leica-esque font and the heavy, oversized hour window. Then there is the unusual, squat case rendered in Chanel's proprietary beige gold. Finally, the black movement comprised of circle after circle is a visual treat. - Mark Cho

    - Chanel dominates the world of haute couture with their “Timeless” flap bags and staple little black jackets. But when it comes their timepieces, the first model that comes to mind might be their emblematic white or black ceramic J12 for the female audience. In 2016, the Maison unveiled the Monsieur de Chanel. This was their very first fully in-house wristwatch which was not only well received by the fashion community, but also the watchmaking industry.

    - Equipped with jumping hours, small seconds and retrograde minutes, this quintessentially elegant and versatile design is made specifically for men with a limited edition of 300 pieces only. As a special nod to Chanel high jewellery, the first 150 examples are made in white gold, while the latter is made of their proprietary beige gold, in favour of the typical yellow or pink gold. Much like the present lot, each piece is fitted in a generous 40mm rounded case, with subtly curved downturned lugs that perfectly caress the contours of the wrist.

    - Aside from its unusual vertical time display, the key ingredient of the Monsieur de Chanel is its movement within. The Caliber 1 marks the Maison’s first step into making mechanical movements and laying the foundations for their stake in high-end watchmaking. Developed in-house at Chanel Horlogerie, a small team of eight was responsible for the construction of Chanel’s first movement within the confines of the G&F Chatelain complex in La Chaux-de-Fonds. With the help of Romain Gauthier, the Caliber 1 is as exceptionally finished as its dial and case.

    - The discreetly brilliant Swiss independent watchmaker was born in the Vallée de Joux with horology running through his veins. Making well under 100 pieces under his own name per year, Mr Gauthier is also known for manufacturing precision movement components for other high-end brands. In his partnership with the Parisian fashion house, his workshop was trusted to make and finish the wheels, shafts, pinions, drums, barrel covers and balances along with other turning parts of the Caliber 1.

    - Upon close examination of the movement, a small hallmark of a lion is positioned on the bridge at 5 o’clock, used to distinguish Chanel’s in-house movements from out-sourced calibers. As a symbol of courage and valour, this emblem pays homage to Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel, a force to be reckoned with at the time the brand was conceived, who was also born a Leo. The Caliber 1 bears a cool, modern aesthetic, featuring a monochromatic complexion with a combination of matte and glossy finishes, suited in an all-black ADLC (Amorphous Diamond Like Carbon) livery.

    - Not just a tastefully executed wristwatch that exudes a suave, masculine energy, this model is a high-end piece that commemorates the brand’s pledge to commit to haute horology, made for serious collectors. Numbered 16 of a limited edition of 150 pieces, the presented beige gold Monsieur de Chanel is offered in excellent overall condition.
