Good To Know:
- Numbered 0, first one to be made in 2000
- Platinum case with mysterious one minute tourbillon
- Blued openworked movement
Cédric Johner may not be a household name but he is part of the first pioneer independent watchmakers having created their eponymous brand. After a few years working as a jeweler, Johner set up his workshops in Geneva and presented his first wristwatch in 1997.
His approach to watchmaking merged both his horological and jewellery background. He remained traditional with his movements in their conception and presentation but his cases were delightfully creative, unusual and playful.
Crafted by hand, Johner's signature organic Abysse case is instantly recognizable. Numbered 0, the present lot is the first of its kind of his mysterious winding tourbillon to be made. Openworked in design, the entire movement is displayed in its full glory. The blued bridges and plates are decorated with guilloché using Johner's vintage machineries, while the polished steel tourbillon cage stands out together with its feuille hands. Its calibre's components was a collaboration with Christophe Claret based on the calibre CLA 97, Johner modified all parts to create his Calibre 80 in his workshop.
An incredible find, the Abyss 2080/4 tourbillon is an exciting offering from an independent watchmaker who has found an immediately recognizable design language. Phillips would like to thank the brand for research of the present timepiece.
