A caseback inscription is not decoration. It is a secret the wearer carries all day: a reminder, a joke, a declaration of love or humility that the world never sees.

Great icons have understood this. Joanne Woodward had “DRIVE CAREFULLY ME” engraved into Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona ref. 6239. Marlon Brando etched “M. Brando” onto his GMT-Master. Jackie Kennedy’s Cartier Tank was marked “Stas to Jackie.” In each case the engraving did what no factory finish could: it made the watch special.

A calm whisper and true words of wisdom, this Cartier Crash tells a personal story of its owner. A creation under the Cartier customization program known as NSO (New Special Order), it is a unique design by choice from the original owner. A humble white gold asymmetric case with a pine green dial, its numerals are in pure white and glows in the dark. Its crown is complemented with a calm green sapphire cabochon. Turning the watch over sits the phrase “Let it be”. While perhaps a famous song from one of the most beloved British star rings in your head, the meaning of three simple words together is illuminating.

Well preserved and rarely worn, the watch was clearly kept as a companion. With Cartier’s NSO program now producing far fewer client-driven unique works, this is not only a chance to acquire a Crash. It is a chance to own one that carries wisdom on its back.

Cartier

French

With the Constitution of 1848 came a new standard for luxury in France. Founded one year prior by Louis-Francois Cartier, the house of Cartier was one of the first to use platinum in jewelry making. This incredibly expensive material became the stepping-stone for Cartier to experiment in form, mechanisms and attitude. It helped men move from pocket watches to wristwatches, effectively making the watch much more functional and prominent in a man's overall wardrobe.

Cartier did not only touch on functionality. Inspired by a commissioned painting by George Barbier featuring a black panther at the feet of an elegantly bejeweled woman, Cartier began incorporating wild animals in his designs—most notably, Cartier Panthère rings, bangle bracelets and watches. Yet it wasn't until the late 1960s that the house of Cartier debuted their iconic yellow and rose gold LOVE collection, which includes the famous bracelet that only a special screwdriver can open.
