One of Cartier’s most exciting limited-edition releases in recent years, the Pebble caused an immediate stir when it was announced in 2022. The model sold out almost overnight, generating a waiting list that rivalled the most exclusive watches of the era. Today it ranks among the most sought-after of Cartier’s recent creations; the present example is only the third to appear at public auctions and remains an unworn piece from its original owner.

The Pebble forms an indelible part of Cartier’s history and embodies what the Maison does best: the seamless merging of form and function. Known as “the Pebble” or “Baseball” for its distinctive appearance, this watch is deceptively simple. Its entire aesthetic rests on the tension between two pure geometric forms—the circle of the case and the square of the dial. That contrast delivers an organic visual impact, proving Cartier’s ability to achieve something momentous through restraint alone.

Although first created in the 1970s, the Pebble had never been reissued until 2022, when Cartier launched it in a limited edition of just 150 pieces. The present example numbered 111 features the new off-white cream dial whose soft, warm tone lends genuine vintage appeal. Preserved in unworn condition and complete with its original certificate and presentation box, it offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire one of Cartier’s purest and most considered modern recreations of a true design classic.

Cartier

French

With the Constitution of 1848 came a new standard for luxury in France. Founded one year prior by Louis-Francois Cartier, the house of Cartier was one of the first to use platinum in jewelry making. This incredibly expensive material became the stepping-stone for Cartier to experiment in form, mechanisms and attitude. It helped men move from pocket watches to wristwatches, effectively making the watch much more functional and prominent in a man's overall wardrobe.

Cartier did not only touch on functionality. Inspired by a commissioned painting by George Barbier featuring a black panther at the feet of an elegantly bejeweled woman, Cartier began incorporating wild animals in his designs—most notably, Cartier Panthère rings, bangle bracelets and watches. Yet it wasn't until the late 1960s that the house of Cartier debuted their iconic yellow and rose gold LOVE collection, which includes the famous bracelet that only a special screwdriver can open.
