Catalogue Essay
- Audemars Piguet was among the first brands to incorporate tantalum into its production line. Rarely utilized in watchmaking, tantalum is a heavy, hard, and lustrous metal that exhibits an attractive dark and modern sheen. The adaptation of tantalum requires very high temperatures, but once formed, it is highly corrosion-resistant and exceptionally durable.

- Research indicates that Audemars Piguet developed its first tantalum watch at the request of King Juan Carlos of Spain, who desired a Royal Oak with a stealthy appearance.

- Aesthetically, the present watch boasts an appealing allure that can truly be described as one of the most stunning iterations of the Royal Oak. Featuring a striking grey dial complemented by an 18K pink gold bezel and accents, this timepiece impeccably embodies the fusion of outstanding aesthetics and superb technical craftsmanship. Furthermore, this configuration is also only seen in MK1 and MK2 of this reference and only produced in the 1990s.

- No longer in production, the present ref. 14790TR, dated to 1994 as confirmed by the Audemars Piguet digital Extract from the Archives, is offered in excellent condition. This piece is ideal for the discerning collector seeking a classic icon crafted from a unique metal.

Audemars Piguet

Swiss | 1881

A specialist in the manufacture of complications since it was established in 1881, Audemars Piguet never ceases to impress with a rich history of creating bold, even audacious, timepieces underpinned by traditional watchmaking at its finest. This Le Brassus-based Swiss manufacturer is one of only two major manufacturers still owned by the founding family. Since its earliest days, AP is considered a leader in the field of minute repeaters and grande complication pocket and wristwatches. The brand is devoted to preserving the history of watchmaking in the Vallée de Joux, showcased at their superb museum in Le Brassus.

Today, the brand is best known for its Royal Oak models, a revolutionary luxury sports watch launched in 1972. Other key models include early minute repeating wristwatches, vintage chronograph wristwatches, such as the oversized reference 5020, perpetual calendar watches and the Royal Oak Offshore, first introduced in 1993.
