Enamel pocket watches were highly sought-after in China during the late Qing dynasty and early Republican eras. These timepieces, encased in colored enamel rather than plain metal, added artistry and beauty to European timekeeping advancements. Watchmakers catered to Chinese tastes by producing lavish enamel pocket watches as culturally resonant status symbols, such as the present pocket watch manufactured for the Chinese market from the 1920s. Stamped with an EV hallmark on the inner caseback, we can attribute this pocket watch to Ernest Veisse, a jewelry retailer established in 1900, the shop was located at 12 rue du Bouloi Paris, then later moved to 55 rue Greneta.
It is not often that one encounters a square-shaped pocket watch, let alone one that has been exquisitely decorated in gold and enamel, fitted with a matching chain in precious materials. Possibly a special order from an important client, the timepiece is characterised by its classical simplicity and elegance. The present pocket watch dial features a time only function with small seconds, applied numerals and hands. Framing the dial and caseback is a translucid green enamelled with white enamel foliage motives on all sides. Within the center of the caseback lies a vista of wonder - two noble tigers, vividly rendered in enamel, fighting amidst palm fronds and tranquil waters. The very air seems to vibrate with the vitality of the beasts as they tread through the painted jungle. In the distant sky, the sunset glimmers with stripes of sunray shinning in shifting light – bringing to life the vivid scenery.
Fitted with a matching watch chain made of ruby, emerald, diamonds, gold and platinum, the color symbolism from Chinese culture often inspired the palette, with red and gold denoting prosperity and good fortune. The tigers symbolizing bravery and strength in Chinese culture, further caters to the tastes of the Chinese market. The presence of its original fitted leather presentation box adds further appeal to this superb timepiece.
