Alfred Stieglitz - Photographs New York Wednesday, October 9, 2024 | Phillips
  • Taken in 1893, The Terminal is one of Alfred Stieglitz’s most renowned photographs of New York City. It was one of a series of views Stieglitz made in Manhattan in snow, rain, and evening light shortly after his return in 1890 from nearly a decade in Europe. The city was much changed since his departure, and his re-acclimation was difficult, and he sought to make sense of the newly urbanized space by photographing it. On a winter day, at the end of the Third Avenue streetcar line near City Hall, Stieglitz came upon a driver tending to his team of horses. He was moved by the care exhibited by the driver, writing later that ‘America was saved for me. I was no longer alone.’

The Terminal was exhibited widely, at the Royal Photographic Society in London in 1894, the International Exhibition of Pictorial Photography in Buffalo in 1910, and many other venues. Stieglitz included it as a photogravure in the 1911 issue of Camera Work devoted exclusively to his work and published it as the large-format photogravure offered here.
