A. Lange & Söhne 1815 collection was named after Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s birth year. The collection is a tribute to the historic significance with the patent (No. 9349) that was acquired by the brand in 1879 – The subject was “Device in pocket watches for recognizing whether the watch is wound or unwound and for indicating how much times remains before it reaches the total unwound state.”
This was the birth of 1815 Up/Down in 1997 where it makes its first appearance on A. Lange & Söhne catalogue. It was a no-nonsense, highly legible and incredibly attractive watch. Come 2008, A. Lange & Söhne discontinued the 35.9mm version and relaunch the series in 2013 with a makeover of ref. 234.032.
The 1815 Up/Down ref. 221.025 measuring at 35.9mm diameter is one of the first models manufactured in the 90s. Fitted in a rare and sophisticated platinum case, the present model can be identified by its “Gangreserve” power reserve indication at 8 o’clock. Aesthetically slim and serene with its effortless dial display with classic rail-way track and Saxon dotted markers, the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Up/Down features stunning blue-steeled hands marking the passage of time with elegance. Originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, Dresden, Germany, the firm established an entire watchmaking culture and industry in Glashütte. The brand quickly became Germany's finest watchmaker, first creating dependable, easy-to-repair watches before going on to produce some of the world's finest complicated pocket watches, including Grande Sonnerie watches, tourbillon watches and Grande Complications.
On the final day of World War II, their factories were destroyed by Russian bombers, and in 1948 the brand was confiscated by the Soviet Union. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, Ferdinand's great grandson Walter Lange re-established the brand with the objective to once again produce top-quality luxury watches. Now part of the Richemont Group, its original vintage and modern creations are highly coveted by collectors. Key models from the modern era include the Lange 1, Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon and the Zeitwerk.
