Relatively new to the scene, Ming is an innovative Kuala Lumpur-based micro-brand, defined by its combination of high-end Swiss watchmaking and clean aesthetics. First launched in 2017 with the MING 17.01, its classical case with a modern twist became an instant hit among collectors. With a limited production for all series, there is no wonder that each model is sold out within minutes during their release.

The man behind the brand, Ming Thein, is a physicist by training but a professional photographer and true watch aficionado at heart. A passionate and dedicated watch collector, Ming started up his own brand that offers impeccably made timepieces to like-minded feens, at a competitive price point.

Beguiled by the seemingly minimalist aesthetics of the 2020 MING ref. 27.01, the understated mixed finishes on this timepiece create a visual dissonance in layering. The black dial on this time-only piece is accented by a graphite hour track, complemented by a pair of hollow hour and minute hands that transitions from silver to white, depending on the lighting. Featuring the signature “flying blade” lugs and overall case shape, this is a much thinner reference in comparison to its predecessor, ref. 17.01. With a sapphire transparent caseback, the watchmaker invites the wearer to admire the playful contrast between the complexity of the movement and the simplicity of its exterior.

With an ever-growing demand, this is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a Ming design, with the present example offered in excellent conditions, completed with its original accessories.

  • Artist Biography

    Ming

    Malaysian • 1986

Ming Thein is the vision behind MING: he has a diverse background that bridges both the creative and corporate, with more than 10 years in strategy and finance and 20 years as a photographer, with seven as a full time professional. Ming was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1986, educated in Australia, New Zealand, and finally graduated with a masters’ degree in theoretical physics from Balliol College, Oxford at the age of 16.

Somewhere during the mechanical portions of his degree, he contracted the watch bug made worse by a Lange 1815 graduation gift from his parents. It would follow through his early career at KPMG and The Boston Consulting Group, where the generosity of online collector communities allowed him access to their events and watches. His contributions to the community were driven by knowledge (including numerous attempts at movement design) and photography: capturing a personal interpretation of a watch, Ming in a way made them his own and shared a different vision with the collector’s community
