  • Catalogue Essay

Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak was the definitive source of inspiration for its Offshore Chronographs. Given its staggering proportions, in comparison to Gerald Genta’s original design, its nickname— “The Beast” —was coined at Baselworld in 1993.

The present Offshore ref.25770ST was introduced in the late 90s and is also one of the first of its kind to be fitted with a strap, instead of a bracelet. Accompanied by a pair in Kevlar Nylon that can weather extreme conditions and another in crocodile, the wearer has the option to interchange them depending on the occasion, making it a highly versatile timepiece.

This discontinued chronograph wristwatch features a subtle metallic blue ‘Tapisserie’ dial, which has grown in popularity in recent years. The match between its bold brush-finished stainless-steel case with the iconic texturised chronograph dial appeal to cater to the contemporary demand for larger wristwatches.

With an “E” serial from circa 1997, this “Beast” is one of the earlier examples of the reference. Offered in excellent overall conditions, the watch is accompanied by a full set of its original accessories.

    Audemars Piguet

    Swiss • 1881

A specialist in the manufacture of complications since it was established in 1881, Audemars Piguet never ceases to impress with a rich history of creating bold, even audacious, timepieces underpinned by traditional watchmaking at its finest. This Le Brassus-based Swiss manufacturer is one of only two major manufacturers still owned by the founding family. Since its earliest days, AP is considered a leader in the field of minute repeaters and grande complication pocket and wristwatches. The brand is devoted to preserving the history of watchmaking in the Vallée de Joux, showcased at their superb museum in Le Brassus.

Today, the brand is best known for its Royal Oak models, a revolutionary luxury sports watch launched in 1972. Other key models include early minute repeating wristwatches, vintage chronograph wristwatches, such as the oversized reference 5020, perpetual calendar watches and the Royal Oak Offshore, first introduced in 1993.
