Since its launch in 1994, the Lange 1 has been one of A. Lange & Söhne’s most celebrated models. Coveted for their classical Saxon watchmaking with a refreshingly modern twist, the playful dial on the present piece displays eccentric time and seconds with an off-centred oversized date window and its power reserve at 3. As a cornerstone of the brand, this elegant champagne dial is complemented by 18k yellow gold hands and indexes that give it its warm and inviting appeal. Encased in the same material, the wristwatch carries a subtle impression of mass which contributes to its stolidly Germanic and anachronistic presence. Both beautiful inside and out, the sapphire caseback invites the wearer to admire the dependable and beautifully finished calibre L901.0.
With the model’s upgrade, the present watch is the last of its kind before the 101.021 Lange 1 was discontinued and replaced by ref. 191.021. Presented in excellent overall condition, this example is offered with its guarantee and original accessories.
Originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, Dresden, Germany, the firm established an entire watchmaking culture and industry in Glashütte. The brand quickly became Germany's finest watchmaker, first creating dependable, easy-to-repair watches before going on to produce some of the world's finest complicated pocket watches, including Grande Sonnerie watches, tourbillon watches and Grande Complications.
On the final day of World War II, their factories were destroyed by Russian bombers, and in 1948 the brand was confiscated by the Soviet Union. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, Ferdinand's great grandson Walter Lange re-established the brand with the objective to once again produce top-quality luxury watches. Now part of the Richemont Group, its original vintage and modern creations are highly coveted by collectors. Key models from the modern era include the Lange 1, Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon and the Zeitwerk.
