Collector Spotlight: Hong Kong Artist and Designer Alan Chan
Jack of all trades—how else to describe Hong Kong artist Alan Chan? A proponent of the East-meets-West philosophy that embodies his home city, the award-winning designer has conceived interiors for spaces across Asia—from Japan to Malaysia—and designed album covers for Cantopop legends Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui. At ease in both the business and art worlds, his design firm has led branding strategies for Nestle, Disney and Coca-Cola, among others. Selected twice for the Shanghai Biennale and Hong Kong Contemporary Art Award, Chan was also the first Hong Kong designer to hold a solo exhibition at the Shanghai Art Museum and Ginza Graphic Gallery in Tokyo. On top of all that, Chan is an avid collector, a pursuit that began as a personal hobby and evolved into inspiration for his work. Last year, he opened Salon 27, an apartment-style private museum in Hong Kong to showcase his collection of over 400 pieces acquired through the years. The 7,000-square-foot venue captures Chan’s penchant for playful interactions between space and objects. It includes an eclectic array of designs from East and West—antiques from London, oil paintings from Paris, Japanese teaware and European home furniture. At the heart of Chan’s designs is a philosophy he calls “Oriental Passion Western Harmony.” The artist demonstrated this principle when he designed the Pantone Room for Phillips’ 20th Century & Contemporary Art & Design Day Sale in Fall 2020. In this video, Chan describes his design philosophy and how he applied it to our Pantone Room in Hong Kong.
