Further Details

In the 1960s, Italian scholar, curator, and gallerist Arturo Schwarz commissioned artists from across the world to create etchings for his fourteen-volume International Anthology of Contemporary Engraving, which was divided into two parts: The Forerunners of the Avant-Garde and The International Avant-Garde. The second volume of The Forerunners of the Avant-Garde brought together eleven of the most preeminent Surrealists artists into a volume entitled Surrealism Between the Two Wars. These etchings, by luminaries such as Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte, and Man Ray together serve as a testament to the artistic revolution of Surrealism; the importance of each artist’s social context and the interchange of ideas between them is reflected across each of the volume’s prints, bringing to light the movement’s unifying themes and unique aesthetic preoccupations.
