  • Catalogue Essay

    - A re-edition of the 1936 timepiece, the Vacheron Constantin Carree Historique was launched in 2000 as a limited edition of 600 pieces. Available across four metals: yellow, pink, white gold and platinum, the squared timepiece is designed with beautiful art deco block-shaped stepped lugs that anchors all four corners of the case.

    - Great presence on the wrist, the present white gold example is elegantly size at 35mm in length. An intriguing design, the block-like aesthetic of the sigma dial translates to the applied gold markers surrounded by a matching cut-out relief. Consistent and perfectly balanced, even the typeface of the ‘60’ seconds marker on the sunken sub-register is squared.

    - Paired with a set of over-sized faceted sword hands, this dress watch is quirky yet sophisticated. Turing the watch over reveals its beautiful cal. 1017 manual movement based on a JLC 822 calibre providing a power reserve of 45 hours.

    - Numbered 276 and preserved in a stunning “new-old-stock” condition by its original owner, the timepiece retains bevels and edges that are razor sharp. Complete with its accessories, the Carree Historique is an underrated gem. Please note that the proceeds of the sale of the present watch will be given by the Consignor to various charities.

  • Artist Biography

    Vacheron Constantin

    Swiss • 1755

The world's oldest watch brand in continuous operation since its founding in 1755, Vacheron Constantin was the first watch company to manufacture movements with interchangeable parts beginning in 1839. Vacheron's watches are admired for their Latin-influenced case designs, well-balanced proportions and exquisitely finished movements of the highest quality. The Geneva-based manufacturer is known for their highly complicated masterpieces, including the King Farouk Grand Complication made in 1935, the Tour de l'Ile that was the most complicated serially produced wristwatch when introduced in 2005 and the 57260 — the world’s most complicated watch — made in 2015.

Key vintage models include minute repeating wristwatches such as the references 4261, chronographs such as the references 4178 and 6087 and the oversized Cioccolotone models such as ref. 4737. Collectors also appreciate Vacheron's Chronometer Royal pocket and wristwatches, as well as the '222,' the brand's first luxury sports watch produced from 1977 through 1984.
