  • Catalogue Essay

    - Renowned as pioneers of independent watchmaking since the late 1990s, Urwerk founders Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner have consistently challenged the norms of conservative Swiss watchmaking with their unique and creative vision.

    - In the autumn of 2019, Urwerk introduced the first UR-100, a timepiece that struck a balance between visual intricacy and what many consider to be the brand's most wearable case design to date. However, towards the end of 2022, an intriguing variant UR-100V UltraViolet was unveiled, featuring an enchanting royal purple hue that immediately captivates the eye with its mystical appeal.

    - Not only are the carousels and caseback plate adorned in a matte shade of purple, but the DLC-coated titanium case itself radiates a violet hue, achieved through a sand-blasting process that creates a textured, matte surface.

    - Beyond its unconventional time-telling approach, this timepiece boasts celestial complications that evoke a sense of fascination with space and astronomy. A window positioned between 9 and 11 o'clock showcases the distance of 555 kilometers one would traverse in rotation if standing on the equator. Additionally, at the 2 o'clock position, it displays the distance the Earth covers along its orbit around the Sun, approximately 35,742 kilometers every 20 minutes.

    - The new caliber 12.02 replaces its predecessor, the caliber 12.01, with aesthetic adjustments that bring the central aluminum carousel slightly closer to the minutes scale, enhancing legibility.

    - Preserved in nearly mint condition, this rare Urwerk timepiece possesses an exquisite aesthetic appeal that is truly captivating to behold.

  • Artist Biography

    Urwerk

    Swiss • 1997

The Swiss firm's name "Urwerk" is a play on the German word meaning clockwork. "Ur" is an ancient Sumerian city in which the populace used sundials for timekeeping, while "werk" is German for creation. The company started by Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei is known for their innovative avant-garde designs inspired by space travel. With their own take on time indication, like many of their contemporaries, their futuristic timepieces are rooted in high-end traditional watchmaking. Their signature floating method of time indication using rotating satellites traces back to a watch made in 1656. Producing only 150 watches per year, they have impressed connoisseurs with their innovativeness and cutting-edge technical prowess.
