GOOD TO KNOW
• Formerly in the collection of noted actor Robin Williams
• Early example of platinum Reference 3 dating to 1995
• Guilloché dial executed by Derek Pratt
Urban Jürgensen’s Reference 3 was first introduced in 1993, an evolution of the Reference 2. It is estimated that 100 examples of the Reference 3 were planned, though it is not clear if all 100 pieces were manufactured. This particular Reference 3, numbered 044 on the dial, was formerly in the collection of beloved American actor Robin Williams, and was sold by his estate in 2018.
The hand guilloché dial required up to 700 different operations and 2 full days to complete, executed by master artisan Derek Pratt. The satin outer track with Roman numerals and simple minute divisions frames the clean guilloché center. The indication for day, date, month and moon phases are symmetrically placed: the windows for day and month horizontally; the subdials for moon phases and date vertically. The tear drop lugs have been individually forged, heat treated, hand polished and individually soldered onto the watch case in a way which makes the soldering line invisible to the naked eye.
One of less than a dozen Reference 3 examples cased in platinum, it differs from its predecessor Reference 2 by integrating an up/down indicator at 12 o’clock clock subtly placed under the moon phase display. While aesthetically hardly noticeable, technically it is quite a momentous achievement, as the complication was added without increasing the dimensions of the watch from Ref. 2. This novel feature, designed and patented by Derek Pratt, required 2 years of development.
