Catalogue Essay
Introduced in 1954 as part of Universal Genève's collaboration with Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), the Polerouter was designed to provide pilots with greater resistance to magnetic fields while navigating above the polar regions. Universal turned to a young Gerald Genta, then in his early 20s, to create the watch—a talent who would later become renowned as one of the greatest watch designers of all time. While the Polerouter represents some of Genta's early work, it already hints at the geometric elegance that would define his more famous designs.
This particular watch features a case and dial both in pink gold, achieving the highly sought-after “pink on pink” configuration that remains desirable today. While the Polerouter is also available in white and black dial variations, the pink dial stands out with its quadrant design, characterized by contrasting radial and circular brushing. Complemented by a matching pink gold bracelet, the 34mm case is both perfect and elegant for daily wear.
Delving into the movement, the watch is powered by the automatic Microtor caliber 218-2, developed in collaboration with the Buren Watch Company, with Patent No. 329805 granted on May 27, 1955. Accompanied by the original guarantee and presentation box, it is quite rare to find a well-preserved example that includes both box and papers, making this Polerouter a remarkable addition to any collection.
