Remark (Modern Designer Vase #8) continues Tony Albert’s investigation into the imagery and identification of appropriated Indigenous Australian iconography in domestic decoration and design. It incorporates fabric from Albert’s personal collection of “Aboriginalia”—a term he coined to describe kitsch homewares and collectibles that inappropriately depict Aboriginal people and cultural material. As objects that were not made by Aboriginal people, these inauthentic images silence the voices and autonomy of Indigenous communities. Yet, they remain an important societal record that should not be forgotten.

Albert is one of Australia’s foremost contemporary artists with a long-standing interest in the cultural misrepresentation of Aboriginal people. Drawing on both personal and collective histories, his multidisciplinary practice considers the ways in which optimism can be used to overcome adversity. His work poses crucial questions about how we remember, give justice to and rewrite complex and traumatic histories. Albert is the first Indigenous Trustee for the Art Gallery of New South Wales. His commitment to connecting and collaborating with other artists has made him an integral part of Australia’s contemporary arts community.
