Catalogue Essay
Au Hoi Lam is part of a new generation of artists from Hong Kong inspired by their own intimate life and create highly autobiographical works. Abstract paintings with faded and pale colours typically represent Hoi Lam’s style and practice. They display the repetition of organised patterns on the canvas and embody the influence that Foucault had on the artist. Her paintings are quietly elegant with nuanced variations of colours with almost obsessively made patterns. Au uses pencil, which reveals traces of the drawing process as clues of her personal life. These paintings are created as a visual journal with fragments of daily life. Memorandum (December 2014) shows a faded map of Hong Kong Island. It manifest a psychological state as a citizen after the Umbrella Movement in the autumn 2014. Au declares, “My paintings offer me an opportunity to reflect on my own sensibilities towards life, a constant reminder that alternates between a gentle caress and a weak sting."
