Heuer has long been associated with precision timekeeping with the founder Edouard Heuer patenting a chronograph in 1882, and receiving another patent for an oscillating pinion (1887) still used today. Heuer chronographs have been used for timed events from the Olympics to the Grand Prix of Monaco, and today these legendary sport watches are sought by collectors for their iconic designs and technical innovations. The Carrera, introduced in 1963, paid tribute to the 1950s Carrera Pan Americana automobile road rally in Mexico, which at the time was considered the most dangerous and deadly car race.

Edouard’s great-grandson Jack was instrumental in the 1960s and ‘70s with the development of some of the finest chronograph watches known today. In 1966, the brand released their Carrera Dato 45 reference 3147N – one of the first models featuring a 45 minute register with rotating date disc. The first execution model featured two subsidiary dials with date at 12 o’clock, however the chronograph hands blocked the date, and in 1968 Heuer introduced the second execution timepiece with a single subsidiary chronograph register at 3 o’clock, and date aperture at 9 o’clock. The 1960s design and aesthetic of the model is unquestionable, and it was for this reason Hodinkee chose to collaborate with Heuer for a limited re-edition model.

Released in 2021, the Tag Heuer Carrera Dato Limited Edition for Hodinkee is a lovely re-interpretation of the past, and while the essence of the 1960s remains, the calibre Heuer 02 showcases 21st century innovation and technology. The in-house automatic movement draws on the past and features a thinner movement with increased power reserve to 80 hours, a vertical clutch for improved start-stop precision, as well as an improved column wheel for more precise functionality.

Generously donated by Hodinkee, the present model, number 88 of 250 examples, is in unworn condition and complete with its accessories. The chronograph was available through the Hodinkee Shop, and TAG Heuer boutiques in the United States and Japan. Heuer chronographs are a reminder of the fine tool watches of the mid 20th-century, and this modern-day example is a tribute to both Jack Heuer and superior horological craftsmanship.

This watch is being sold to benefit the Horological Society of New York’s ongoing education initiatives, in support of international traveling and virtual education programs, scholarships for students of watchmaking, and awards to watchmaking schools.
