Good to Know:
- Large balance and off set time indication
- Only 100 made in different dial and case combinations
- Bearing number 2 making it one of the earliest models
- Winner of the 2022 GPHG Revelation award
Discreet by temperament, formidable by craft, Sylvain Pinaud stands among the most celebrated independent watchmakers to have emerged in recent years. After having spent a large part of his childhood next to his father’s bench watching him restore timepieces, Pinaud decided to embrace the same profession. After his studies, he joined Franck Muller in the complications department, followed by a stint restoring antique clocks and watches and finally by joining THA (of Journe, Halter and Flageollet fame).
Pinaud had long spoken of striking out alone, a resolve formed as early as his student years. That ambition was realised over a single, exacting year of labour: a unique monopusher chronograph, the achievement for which he was awarded, in 2019, the Meilleur Ouvrier de France, France's most exalted craftsman's distinction, contested across disciplines as varied as haute cuisine, cabinetry, embroidery and of course watchmaking.
In 2022, still a name known only to the most attentive collectors, Pinaud introduced his first watch offered in (relatively) serial form: the Origine, a model that struck an immediate chord with the connoisseur community. The same year brought the Revelation prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, followed in 2024 by the Best Chronograph award, a rapid and emphatic confirmation of Pinaud's stature within the contemporary horological landscape.
The movement, conceived in its entirety by Pinaud, is remarkable for its architectural boldness: a 13mm balance wheel dominates the dial at six o'clock, with hours, minutes, and seconds offset in asymmetric counterbalance. The back presents hand-finishing of the highest order with a potent mix of frosted plates against crisply polished bevels.
Pinaud has confirmed that production of the Origine will be limited, across all case and dial variations, to a mere 100 examples, a self-imposed rarity that has since been rendered absolute, the edition now being fully allocated. The present example carries the additional distinction of bearing number 2, placing it among the very first watches to leave the workshops and lending it a historical significance beyond its already considerable technical and aesthetic merit.
