Catalogue Essay
Aesthetically similar to its predecessors, the ref. 6239 and 6241, the ref. 6262 and 6264 were upgraded with the caliber 727. The present ref. 6264 circa 1970 with a 2.3 million serial number is one of these exceptionally rare examples. Instantly recognizable, it showcases a creamy white backdrop, with the “DAYTONA” insignia prominently displayed at the top of the register at 6 o’clock. The eye-catching “Paul Newman” dial features attractive luminous plots that have aged uniformly to an attractive buttery hue. Notably, this “Panda Paul Newman" dial configuration, almost exclusive to references 6262 and 6264, is characterized by a striking two-tone black and white color scheme that allows the red “Daytona” designation to take center stage.

Furthermore, the dial of the present piece is extremely well-preserved with hardly any signs of ageing, maintaining an attractive overall condition over the years. Fresh to the market, this much-treasured ref. 6264 is complete with its original certificate and presentation box, even along with a service guarantee from Rolex Sapporo Japan dated 1975, confirming that the watch has been overhauled with the crystal and gasket replaced. Offered by a distinguished Japanese collector, the present timepiece would be a monumental addition to any collection of fine vintage watches.

Rolex

Swiss | 1905
Founded in 1905 England by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf & Davis, it soon became known as the Rolex Watch Company in 1915, moving its headquarters to Geneva in 1919. Like no other company, the success of the wristwatch can be attributed to many of Rolex's innovations that made them one of the most respected and well-known of all luxury brands. These innovations include their famous "Oyster" case — the world's first water resistant and dustproof watch case, invented in 1926 — and their "Perpetual" — the first reliable self-winding movement for wristwatches launched in 1933. They would form the foundation for Rolex's Datejust and Day-Date, respectively introduced in 1945 and 1956, but also importantly for their sports watches, such as the Explorer, Submariner and GMT-Master launched in the mid-1950s.One of its most famous models is the Cosmograph Daytona. Launched in 1963, these chronographs are without any doubt amongst the most iconic and coveted of all collectible wristwatches. Other key collectible models include their most complicated vintage watches, including references 8171 and 6062 with triple calendar and moon phase, "Jean Claude Killy" triple date chronograph models and the Submariner, including early "big-crown" models and military-issued variants.
