GOOD TO KNOW
• Rare platinum model with smooth bezel and large diamond indices
• Serviced by Rolex in 2022

Cherished by collectors around the world, Rolex’s Day-Date model was the first automatic waterproof chronometer wristwatch with an instantaneously changing date and fully spelled out day in an aperture at 12 o’clock. It has been produced with a variety of dial styles, from hardstone to the exceptional colored “stella” dials, to sporting gem-set numerals like the present watch, as well as pavé diamond-set dials. Available today in both a 36mm diameter case and a 40mm diameter case, Rolex’s creativity has been best expressed with its Day-Date collection and while most examples feature fluted bezels, smooth bezels watches like the present watch are rare and highly collectable. The reference 1802, with polished bezel, was first introduced in 1963, and was available in platinum, yellow, white and pink gold.

The present Day-Date is an understated mid-20th century timepiece. Collectors will appreciate the minimalist design with rare smooth bezel with a luxurious platinum case and bracelet. Its well-preserved dial is especially noteworthy – made especially for the platinum model, the diamond set hour markers are significantly larger than those found on white or yellow gold cased models . The Day-Date is universally appreciated for its ability to grace any wrist due to its perfect balanced size and versatility. The watch was factory serviced in 2022 and is in excellent condition retaining factory plastic wrap to the case sides. The Day-Date remains a modern and sophisticated timepiece since it was first released 70 years ago.

Rolex

Swiss | 1905

Founded in 1905 England by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf & Davis, it soon became known as the Rolex Watch Company in 1915, moving its headquarters to Geneva in 1919. Like no other company, the success of the wristwatch can be attributed to many of Rolex's innovations that made them one of the most respected and well-known of all luxury brands. These innovations include their famous "Oyster" case — the world's first water resistant and dustproof watch case, invented in 1926 — and their "Perpetual" — the first reliable self-winding movement for wristwatches launched in 1933. They would form the foundation for Rolex's Datejust and Day-Date, respectively introduced in 1945 and 1956, but also importantly for their sports watches, such as the Explorer, Submariner and GMT-Master launched in the mid-1950s.

One of its most famous models is the Cosmograph Daytona. Launched in 1963, these chronographs are without any doubt amongst the most iconic and coveted of all collectible wristwatches. Other key collectible models include their most complicated vintage watches, including references 8171 and 6062 with triple calendar and moon phase, "Jean Claude Killy" triple date chronograph models and the Submariner, including early "big-crown" models and military-issued variants.
