Catalogue Essay
• The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 16523 is powered by the legendary Calibre 4030, an automatic chronograph movement based on the Zenith El Primero. Daytonas from the 1990s are highly collectible, and the 16523 is no exception. Due to Zenith’s limited annual production capacity of approximately 25,000 El Primero movements, shared between Rolex, Zenith’s own models, and other clients, availability of these Daytonas was constrained, making them scarce at authorized dealers and increasingly sought after today.
• The present example features a stunning champagne sunburst dial with contrasting black registers and the iconic bright red “Daytona” script. All applied hour markers and hands are crafted in 18k yellow gold, harmonizing beautifully with the dial’s tone. The Rolex coronet at 12 o’clock is also rendered in solid gold. As an original 1993 factory dial, this S-series example is fitted with tritium lume, which has gracefully aged to a warm ecru patina, adding vintage charm and character.
• Of particular note is the “inverted 6” subdial at 6 o’clock: a rare and desirable feature among collectors. This dial configuration, displaying five lines of text at 12 o’clock, was produced only between 1991 and 1993, further enhancing its collectability. This S-series Daytona, dating to circa 1993 and presented in excellent condition, exemplifies the enduring appeal of early Zenith-powered models and showcases the subtle nuances that continue to captivate Rolex connoisseurs worldwide.

Rolex
Swiss | 1905Founded in 1905 England by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf & Davis, it soon became known as the Rolex Watch Company in 1915, moving its headquarters to Geneva in 1919. Like no other company, the success of the wristwatch can be attributed to many of Rolex's innovations that made them one of the most respected and well-known of all luxury brands. These innovations include their famous "Oyster" case — the world's first water resistant and dustproof watch case, invented in 1926 — and their "Perpetual" — the first reliable self-winding movement for wristwatches launched in 1933. They would form the foundation for Rolex's Datejust and Day-Date, respectively introduced in 1945 and 1956, but also importantly for their sports watches, such as the Explorer, Submariner and GMT-Master launched in the mid-1950s.One of its most famous models is the Cosmograph Daytona. Launched in 1963, these chronographs are without any doubt amongst the most iconic and coveted of all collectible wristwatches. Other key collectible models include their most complicated vintage watches, including references 8171 and 6062 with triple calendar and moon phase, "Jean Claude Killy" triple date chronograph models and the Submariner, including early "big-crown" models and military-issued variants.
