While so-called “pumpkin” dials - the nickname’s reason quite apparent, especially in this case - are known form the market even though very rare, hardly ever such an intense tonality of orange has been seen on a Submariner. This hue stems from the fact that the piece was thoroughly enjoyed throughout its entire lifetime. Analysis of the dial under the microscope does not highlight any sign of tampering: it is our opinion that the color is the result of a natural process and its intensity is the consequence of such intense outdoor usage.

Beyond the enormous aesthetic impact of the dial, this watch is testament to the utmost reliability of Rolex timepieces: it is a watch that was truly used in the situations it was devised for, and forty years after its birth it still is in remarkably good condition. Furthermore, it appears that all parts of the timepiece are original: no exchange was made during service. The clasp is stamped “3 71”, indicating production in the third trimester of 1971, and the back is stamped “IV 70” (fourth trimester of 1970), both absolutely correct for a 2.635M case made in 1971. Furthermore, this watch bearing a "meters first" dial is perhaps one of the last examples to feature the configuration before the transition to "feet first" dials.
