  • Catalogue Essay

Richard Mille has imposed itself as one of the most appreciated and visionary contemporary watch brands. They managed to develop a very well defined canon, both in terms of aesthetics - the oversized curved tonneau-case and skeletonized dial are now virtually synonymous with the company - and in technical terms as well, often borrowing materials and solutions from the world of car racing and avionics.

The present piece in fact fully represents such a tradition-disruptive vocation, as in this instance the base plate of the movement is made of carbon nanofiber, a recently developed material with the very appreciated features of high chemical and physical stability. Other unusual solutions for the timepiece include a crown-function indication and selection: a system somewhat similar to a car gearshift, it is activated with the coaxial pusher on the crown.

A depression will change the crown function cycling between neutral, winding and time setting. The two fan-shaped indicators at 12 serve as, the left one, a classic power reserve indication; the right one a torque indication, telling the amount of torque supplied by the mainspring in dNmm (tenth of newton millimeter). Values between 53 and 65 are optimal for the performance of the movement. The presence of a dual time indication, adjustable with a very convenient pusher at 9, is a very useful addition to the piece and - last but not least - the tourbillon prominently featured at 6 classifies this piece in the realm of the most complicated and appealing complications.

Number 2 of an extremely restricted limited edition of 5 pieces, it originally retailed for circa half a million USD. The absolutely untouched condition and the presence of the original Warranty and winding display case further amplify the appeal and collectability of this remarkable timepiece.

    Richard Mille

    Swiss • 1999

Established in 1999, Richard Mille's ultra-modern timepieces combine cutting-edge materials from high performance worlds such as Formula 1 racecars with high-end traditional watchmaking. The brand's revolutionary designs, technical breakthroughs and exceptional hand-finishing excite even the most discriminating collectors, and have positioned Richard Mille alongside the top makers of the modern luxury watch world.

Innovative watches, such as the RM 027 Tourbillon, which was the world’s lightest mechanical watch when introduced in 2011, have helped the brand invert the concept of the luxury watch. Key models include the RM 009 Tourbillon cased in Aluminum Silicon Carbide (AlSiC), the RM 027-02 Tourbillon made for tennis star Rafael Nadal with a case made from quartz and carbon fiber and the RM 008 split seconds chronograph.
