Catalogue Essay
- Founded by self-taught Spanish watchmaker and AHCI member Aniceto Jimenez Pita in 1990, Pita Barcelona belongs to the early generation of independents. Pita’s works are creative and distinct enough to stand on their own, both then and now, but today they are also a window into the early, enterprising days of contemporary independent watchmaking.
- The Pita Minimal is exactly that – it tells the time with just one hand that indicates both hours and minutes. The thoughtful austerity of the Minimal is more than just removing the minutes hand – the watch has no crown. Pita designed the patented, unorthodox Time-Setting Mechanism (Pita-TSM) that unifies the crown and case back into a single part. The result is a perfectly symmetrical case, without the more common, but hard to manipulate, case-back crown.
- This example is more minimal than most, with a single, cathedral-style hour hand gliding across a serene silver dial. The face is undisturbed by a sweep seconds hand, creating a calming effect while affording a leisurely reading of the time. A surprisingly practical time scale offers a 10-minute resolution with clearly defined hours and half hours.
- Since Pita Barcelona watches are primarily built-to-order, there will be few, if any with this exact hand, dial, and case combination – so opportunities to acquire this particularly handsome variant of the Minimal are few and far between.
