  • Catalogue Essay

    - Launched in 2006, the Patek Philippe ref. 5960 annual calendar flyback chronograph represented a milestone for the esteemed manufacture. Along with the Nautilus ref. 5980, this model marked the first time Patek Philippe incorporated an in-house chronograph movement into a non-perpetual calendar watch. At the time, most Patek Philippe watches utilized Lemania ébauches, but the ref. 5960 debuted the brand's first entirely in-house designed and assembled chronograph caliber.

    - The novelty of the movement is fully expressed in the dial design of this reference. Dominated by the “bull’s eye” subdial at 6 o'clock, which combines the minute and hour totalizers into one register, this watch was the first Patek Philippe serially produced timepiece to feature a 12-hour counter. Combined with the timeless proportions of the 40mm Calatrava-inspired case, the result is a sporty yet refined and elegant aesthetic.

    - The first series of the reference - represented by the present watch - was in production until 2013. In 2009 the platinum version also appeared with a steel/blue dial (and a pink gold version was released). Adding to the allure of the watch, this piece features the historical Geneva Seal on the movement. As in 2009 Patek Philippe introduced their own seal, only examples from the early years of production bear the Geneva seal.

    - Offering an annual calendar, flyback chronograph, and in-house movement in a stylish platinum case, the present Patek Philippe ref. 5960 represented a turning point for the brand and has since secured its status as a contemporary icon. This well-preserved example from 2006 with its full set if accessories provides an opportunity to acquire a landmark reference that shaped Patek Philippe's modern chronograph and sports watch collections.
