Catalogue Essay
- As a successor to the revered ref. 3448, the ref. 3940 perpetual calendar launched in 1985 signaled a new era for Patek Philippe. While paying homage to the past, its slim, stepped Calatrava-style case and redesigned subdial layout brought modern flair.

- Powered by the groundbreaking ultra-thin cal. 240 with micro-rotor, the ref. 3940 enabled an elegantly slim profile. This inventive automatic movement appealed to a new generation seeking to move beyond their fathers' watches.

- This stunning second series example from circa 1992 features a cross hair leap year indicator, sloped subdials, and two-tone 24-hour hand. Housed in a rare white gold case, it displays deep, crisp hallmarks denoting utmost care and preservation.

- Both contemporary and traditional, the ref. 3940 masterfully blended vintage perpetual calendar elegance with modern ingenuity. Offered here in excellent overall condition, the present example is fresh to the market and complete with Certificate of Origin and presentation box.

Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
