  • Catalogue Essay

I bought this almost ten years ago and it has been a truly faithful companion. In the early days, I often wore it to the Pitti Uomo mens' tradeshow in Florence, Italy, when people didn't really care about these things. It seemed like the right watch to wear at the time, subtle at first glance, striking upon inspection. It remains the most beautiful Nautilus I have ever seen. - Mark Cho

    - The present stainless steel ref. 3800 is no ordinary Nautilus. Featuring a rare dial with a sunburst finish, this radial grey canvas is contrasted with hand-painted white minute markers.

    - Though uncommon, this dial variation was advertised in a Patek Philippe brochure from 1986, depicted in a gold and stainless steel dual-tone livery. Only a handful of two-tone examples are publicly known to have this as their original configuration, along with one possibly unique example offered in platinum. However, collectors were given the liberty to request for a change of dial, despite having worn their watch for some time, which explains why these radial dials can sometimes be spotted in other case variants. For instance, the stainless steel example at hand which houses this lustrous dial would have been ordered separately from the watch itself.

    - According to its Certificate of Origin and Extract from the Archives, the present wristwatch originally left the factory in 1990 with a “black matte ribbed dial” and “white gold indexes”. Fortunately, a receipt from Patek Philippe is further delivered with this timepiece, confirming that the updated anthracite grey dial with white markers was installed by the manufacturer in 2011.

Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
