  • Catalogue Essay

    - The Patek Philippe Aquanaut ref. 5066 made its debut in 1997 and was notably the first model from the brand to come with a rubber strap.

    - Initially released as a limited series with only 1,000 pieces, this watch draws considerable design cues from its predecessor, the Nautilus. The Aquanaut ref. 5066 features a distinctive rounded octagonal bezel and is crafted with a precisely made 36mm diameter case that consists of three parts and is waterproof.

    - It is equipped with the in-house cal. 330 SC, which was standard for the early versions of this reference. Later iterations, such as this particular piece, boast a sapphire crystal caseback, showcasing the beautifully crafted self-winding movement.

    - Exuding a quintessential vintage charm, this watch stands out as a highly desirable addition to any collection. Fresh-to-the-market and consigned by its original owner, the present Aquanaut was acquired as a gift to his wife in 2000. Seldomly worn, the consigner hopes that the next owner of this extraordinary timepiece will cherish it as much as they have. Reminding us that watches are also bearers of stories, love, and memories.

Patek's complicated vintage watches hold the highest number of world records for results achieved at auction compared with any other brand. For collectors, key models include the reference 1518, the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, and its successor, the reference 2499. Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
