  • Catalogue Essay

    - The reference 5170J was first introduced in 2010, replacing the 12-year production run of the CH 27-70 powered reference 5070. Perfectly sized at 39.4mm diameter, this elegant chronograph wristwatch marks a return to the subtle classics from the previous large and bold designs. Variants in pink gold, white gold and platinum were subsequently released after the present reference was discontinued in 2013.

    - The 5170 is reminiscent of the archetypal Patek Philippe chronographs with its harmonious case proportions and simple two-register dial layout design. Balancing the inner minute ring and outer pulsometer scale, the 5170J comes with a dial configuration of applied baton hour markers and Roman numerals for 12 and 6 o’clock, which seems to be exclusive to the yellow gold model, harking back to the dials of the reference 1463 “Tasti Tondi” and reference 130. To the best of our knowledge, less than 50 examples of 5170J has appeared publicly in auction to date.

    - The 5170J further boasts the in-house manual winding calibre CH 29-535 PS, the first movement in the history of Patek Philippe to bear the Patek Philippe Seal, attesting to its finesse and reliability. The research and development for the spectacular movement took five years. To the wearer’s delight, the column wheel and clutch lever system can be observed in action amidst the chamfered and polished bridges through the sapphire caseback.

    - Preserved in excellent condition, the present first-generation example encased in yellow gold is complete with its full set of accessories, and offers a rare opportunity to for the discerning collectors to collect a discontinued classic.

Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
