  • Catalogue Essay

Arguably one of the most influential watches of the 20th century, the ref. 1518 became the foundation for Patek Philippe’s timeless designs and mechanical prowess, ultimately carving the path for their dominance in the world of haute horology. From the positions of the subdials to the moon phases, the DNA of this reference can be seen in some of the most well-received and sought-after perpetual calendar chronographs, including the references 2499 (1951-1987), 3970 (1987-2004), 5970 (2004-2011) and 5270.

The present model, ref. 5971 is by far the most opulent iteration within the ref. 5970 line. Launched in 2007, it was the last of its kind to house a Lemania-based movement and it made its final appearance in the Patek Philippe catalogue in 2011. Powerful in proportions and wrist presence, it is no surprise this discontinued dazzling dime-piece is now a cult favourite that became increasingly more popular and collectable in recent years. Revered for their tried-and-true standards of attention to detail, the bezel is not the only feature adorned with handpicked collection-grade diamonds. Enhanced with diamond-set hour markers, the jet-black lacquered dial is surrounded by a baguette-shaped diamond halo, complete with a gem-set buckle which totals to 42 diamonds of a whopping 4.37 carats.

Fresh-to-the-market, the present ref. 5971P is the 42nd example to be identified and is offered in single-sealed condition, accompanied by its original accessories. This beautiful diamond-set platinum perpetual calendar chronograph is the perfect embodiment of the ultimate excellence in watchmaking and haute joaillerie.

Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
