  • Catalogue Essay

The Nautilus is one of Patek Philippe’s most successful icons and one of the most desirable watches on the market today. First released in 1976 with the reference 3700, the Nautilus was billed as the most expensive stainless steel wristwatches available and had a sporty masculine appeal that was rugged enough for the outdoors, but classic in style and suitable for the office. The Gerald Genta designed case based on maritime portholes is today a gem.

The reference 3800 was launched in 1981 and remained in production until 2006. A smaller version of the reference “Jumbo” 3700, the present watch features a 37.5 mm diameter case and referred to as the “3/4” size. Over the 25-year production span of the reference 3800 many various model types were made, from the classic stainless steel with black dial like the present watch, to yellow gold gem-set editions. The watch was made in four series based:
    1st series until 1987, caliber 335 SC
    2nd series until 1992, caliber 335 SC, quick-set
    3rd series until 1197, caliber 330 134
4th series until 2006, caliber 330 194, like the present watch

Fresh to the market, this distinguished watch is in lovely condition and accompanied by its original Certificate of Origin issued by Cortina Watch. Preserved in overall excellent condition, the present lot is a watch that can easily go from the outdoors to a fancy cocktail party in every single day.
