Good to know:
- Fresh-to-the-market, first time this reference is offered at Phillips
- Exceptionally rare with this black dial example being only the 5th to appear publicly
- Successor to the important ref. 3939
- In barely worn condition from the original owner

Introduced at Baselworld in 2013, it is the successor to the ref. 3939 of 1992, sharing with its predecessor the cal. R TO 27 PS, a movement whose name reveals its functions: minute repeater, tourbillon and small seconds. The reference was made exclusively in white gold and only in production from 2013 to 2019. The present example with an officer-style case and black enamel dial was made until 2016, before the reference was introduced with a blue enamel dial.

The dial is a gold disc covered with fired black enamel, applied with gold Breguet hour numerals and spade hands. The white gold case measures 37mm in diameter, larger than the 33 mm of the ref. 3939, yet modest on the wrist. As with all Patek Philippe minute repeaters, the case is dust and humidity resistant but not water resistant, preserving the purity of the chimes. Assembling a minute repeater typically requires 200 to 300 hours of work, and the gongs are known to display a rich, deep yet delicate resonance that Patek Philippe is best known for.

Offered for the first time at Phillips, this fresh-to-the-market ref. 5539G-001 is presented in barely worn condition from the original owner and is only the 5th example known to the market, representing a truly rare opportunity to acquire a watch that embodies the mechanics and artistry that defines the very best of traditional Genevan watchmaking.

Patek Philippe

Swiss | 1839

Since its founding in 1839, this famous Geneva-based firm has been surprising its clientele with superbly crafted timepieces fitted with watchmaking's most prestigious complications. Traditional and conservative designs are found across Patek Philippe's watches made throughout their history — the utmost in understated elegance.

Well-known for the Graves Supercomplication — a highly complicated pocket watch that was the world’s most complicated watch for 50 years — this family-owned brand has earned a reputation of excellence around the world. Patek's complicated vintage watches hold the highest number of world records for results achieved at auction compared with any other brand. For collectors, key models include the reference 1518, the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, and its successor, the reference 2499. Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
