- The tonneau shape, which gained popularity in the early 20th century, exudes elegance and sophistication. Inspired by the silhouette of a turtle, this model marked Patek Philippe’s first use of this distinctive monobloc case design in a perpetual calendar.
- In production until 2007, the series has been categorized by collectors into three series:
1st Series: produced until 1998 bears movement 77X'XXX
2nd Series: produced until 2005 bears movement 3'12X'XXX (The present example)
3rd Series: bears movement 3'67X'XXX
- The ref. 5040 was crafted in yellow gold, white gold, and pink gold, as well as platinum. This rare ref. 5040P-013 from circa 2003 is fresh-to-the-market and only the 14th example in platinum with black to appear publicly.
