The standard production ref. 5970 were issued in four precious metals. The 18K gold cased watches were paired with a white dial, whilst the platinum variant was the only standard production model that was fitted with a black dial. After officially discontinuing the reference’s standard production, in 2015 at the Patek Philippe Grand Exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London, two more limited variants with salmon dial and bronze tone dial were introduced.

As mentioned above, some important clients of Patek Philippe were able to acquire the ref. 5970 post-discontinuation. Amongst the loyal patrons of the Maison, only a select few are granted access to a unique request dial. Above it is the bespoke commission with one’s monogram presence on the dial, a truly exclusive honour only achievable by collectors that have an utmost importance in the collecting world. Among the ranks of collectors that were granted the honour included Henry Graves, Jr., James W. Packard, J.B. Champion, and the original owner of the present watch Michael Ovitz.

Michael Ovitz, a renowned entrepreneur and talent agent to some of Hollywood’s biggest names, who co-founded Creative Artists Agency and was the one-time president of The Walt Disney Company, is a prominent art collector, possessing a huge collection of watches. His unique, special requested timepieces from Patek Philippe have been surfacing in rare encounters throughout the years, and most of the references by themselves are already highly sought after watches, like the ref. 3940G and ref. 5004J. Previously his ref. 5004P-041 was auctioned at Phillips and sold for a remarkable HKD 6,286,500 in 2023. The present ref. 5970 is another monogrammed piece once owned by him. Unique watch pieces from Ovitz are always in pristine condition, and this watch in particular is even in double-factory-sealed condition fresh to the auction market.

The present ref. 5970, with the monogram “MSO” indicates it was commissioned by “Michael Steven Ovitz”, covering the “120” tachymetre mark often seen on black ref. 5970 dials. What makes this ref. 5970 stands out are the subtle changes in layout that differ from other commissioned pieces. Known to be a high-end watch collector, Eric Clapton also possesses special requested Patek Philippe watches, in which two ref. 5970 owned by him had Breguet numeral hour markers. Even for other “MSO” watches, most of them have Roman numeral “XII” markers. This present watch features a double railway scaled dial with Breguet “12” and spherical markers, a rarely seen configuration with luminous markers on the inner track for minute divisions. The leaf-shaped feuille hands, in which specifically stated on the Certificate of Origin, are also luminous.

A combination of pink gold and black dial is always one of the most appreciated configurations in Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronographs for its classy and elegant appearance. Being an aesthetically pleasing watch, it shall not be overlooked that the movement is, in addition, a highly reliable calibre. The present reference, housing the cal. CH 27-70 Q movement, is the last of the line to bear an outsourced ébauche, the legendary Lemania 2310. A free-sprung Gyromax balance wheel, a redesigned chronograph lever and some customed features were added by Patek Philippe to make it to be one of the most admired perpetual chronographs offered in the market.

An iconic watch of the historic Patek Philippe, the ref. 5970 is a symbol of the firm’s embrace to the new millennium with the essence of their famous line of grand complication watches. An already undoubtedly appealing watch, the reference in its highly sought-after configuration is further elevated by the extremely rare “MSO” monogram, enabling serious watch connoisseurs to behold and have the opportunity to own a bespoke commissioned watch that is virtually unachievable for the general collectors.
