Patek Philippe is well-known for their ability to consult their historical catalogue in order to pull inspiration for modern releases. The reference 5236, first released in 2020, perfectly exemplifies this ethos with its in-line perpetual calendar display directly inspired by complicated mid-century pocket watches such as the reference 725, designed for the American market. The fully hand-polished case with its sharp geometric lines evokes the references 3448 and 3450, inspired by the aesthetics of the Space Age.
The automatic caliber 31-260 features 118 components and was first seen powering the reference 5235 regulator-style annual calendar. It has since been modified with an additional bridge and a platinum micro-rotor to accommodate the high torque required for operating the calendar functions, as well as a hack feature. A mix of modern and vintage, the “rose-gilt opaline” or salmon dial features blackened white gold applied indexes and numerals for legibility and contrast.
In like new condition, this is the first example of the 5236P-010 to appear at public auction as of cataloguing, and comes accompanied by its full suite of accessories.
