Catalogue Essay
- Released as a limited edition of just 500 pieces, the Patek Philippe ref. 5038 in white gold is a perpetual calendar wristwatch of quiet distinction. It is powered by the maison's innovative self-winding cal. 240 Q, whose micro-rotor allows the movement to remain exceptionally slim for a perpetual calendar.

- Patek Philippe's legacy in the domain of the automatic perpetual calendar is storied and deep. It began in 1962 with the landmark ref. 3448, the first serially produced self-winding perpetual calendar wristwatch, and continued through subsequent decades with beloved references such as the ref. 3940.

- The ref. 5038, launched in 1996, draws directly from this lineage. Its case proportions and movement architecture echo the revered ref. 3940, yet it asserts its own identity through a hobnail (Clous de Paris) bezel and a striking black lacquered dial adorned with white painted Roman numerals—an elegant departure from its predecessor's more restrained presentation.

- Among Patek Philippe's perpetual calendar offerings, the ref. 5038 remains one of the most underappreciated, produced exclusively in white gold and never revisited. The present example is preserved in excellent overall condition and accompanied by its accessories. For those seeking a distinctive and handsome perpetual calendar from the Geneva manufacture, this is a compelling choice.

Patek Philippe

Swiss | 1839

Since its founding in 1839, this famous Geneva-based firm has been surprising its clientele with superbly crafted timepieces fitted with watchmaking's most prestigious complications. Traditional and conservative designs are found across Patek Philippe's watches made throughout their history — the utmost in understated elegance.

Well-known for the Graves Supercomplication — a highly complicated pocket watch that was the world’s most complicated watch for 50 years — this family-owned brand has earned a reputation of excellence around the world. Patek's complicated vintage watches hold the highest number of world records for results achieved at auction compared with any other brand. For collectors, key models include the reference 1518, the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, and its successor, the reference 2499. Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
