The reference 3940 is widely regarded as one of the most important perpetual calendar wristwatches of the modern era. Introduced by Patek Philippe in 1985 as the successor to the reference 3450, it marked a significant evolution in the manufacture’s approach to complicated wristwatches. Its elegant 36 mm case, balanced dial layout, and ultra-thin self-winding calibre 240 Q combined technical refinement with exceptional wearability. Produced for over two decades, the reference 3940 became one of Patek Philippe’s longest-running complicated models and remains a benchmark among perpetual calendar wristwatches.

The present reference 3940P-027 occupies a particularly rare position within the history of the model. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first example of a platinum reference 3940 featuring a “BLEU PVD” dial, as confirmed on its Certificate of Origin, to appear at international auction. The watch belongs to a select group of special production pieces officially authorised as “out of production” creations, made available only to privileged clients of the manufacture.

Distinguished by its glossy dark blue lacquer dial, applied white gold baton indexes, and elegant feuille hands, the present example offers a contemporary interpretation of one of Patek Philippe’s most celebrated references while retaining the understated elegance and harmonious proportions that have defined the 3940 throughout its history.

Never offered through standard retail channels, the 3940P-027 represents one of the rarest executions of the reference and stands as a remarkable expression of Patek Philippe’s perpetual calendar tradition.

Patek Philippe

Swiss | 1839

Since its founding in 1839, this famous Geneva-based firm has been surprising its clientele with superbly crafted timepieces fitted with watchmaking's most prestigious complications. Traditional and conservative designs are found across Patek Philippe's watches made throughout their history — the utmost in understated elegance.

Well-known for the Graves Supercomplication — a highly complicated pocket watch that was the world’s most complicated watch for 50 years — this family-owned brand has earned a reputation of excellence around the world. Patek's complicated vintage watches hold the highest number of world records for results achieved at auction compared with any other brand. For collectors, key models include the reference 1518, the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, and its successor, the reference 2499. Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
