The launch of the Patek Philippe reference 5070 in 1998 signaled a moment of quiet significance for Patek Philippe. For the first time in nearly four decades, the manufacture returned to a non-perpetual calendar chronograph, reasserting its mastery in one of watchmaking’s most revered complications.
At its heart beats the manually wound calibre CH 27-70, a heavily modified Lemania 2310 ébauche. Beautifully constructed and revered for its reliability, the movement is distinguished by its classical architecture and an impressive 60-hour power reserve—details that reward even the most seasoned collector upon close inspection.
Although production of the reference concluded in 2009, the story did not end there. In 2015, to coincide with the Watch Art Grand Exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery, the manufacture discreetly extended a rare courtesy to a handful of its most valued patrons. Drawing upon new-old-stock cases and movements from the original production run, Patek Philippe created a series of highly confidential pieces featuring dial and case combinations never offered in the standard catalogue.
The present “Saatchi Edition” reference 5070 is believed to be one of only five examples in white gold with a salmon dial produced, with the present watch being the third known - placing it firmly within the realm of the truly elusive—watches spoken about in collecting circles, yet seldom encountered in the market.
