Catalogue Essay

Nicknamed the “Padellone” by Italian collectors, the Patek Philippe ref. 3448 is undoubtedly a significant milestone for the brand. It features a completely revitalized case design characterized by sharp edges, straight lines and pointed contours. This model also marks the firm's first serially produced self-winding perpetual calendar wristwatch, embodying a style that emerged in the late 1950s and flourished throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The large, sloped bezel enhances the clean dial and accentuates the generous 37.5mm round case.

Introduced in 1962, the ref. 3448 was the only self-winding perpetual calendar wristwatch available on the market for the following 16 years. Its production spanned approximately 23 years, with an estimated total of only 586 examples produced across all metals and four series.

The four series of ref. 3448 can be determined as such:

- The first series features small calendar ring, indexes closer to the center of the dial and engraved/enameled minute divisions.

- The second series introduces beady minute divisions.

- The third series maintains the beady divisions but introduces the large numerals for the date rings and indexes closer to the outer edge of the dial.

- The fourth series - exemplified by the present timepiece - features printed minute divisions.

The present example from the fourth series was manufactured in 1976 and is encased in 18K yellow gold. It is extraordinarily well-preserved, featuring very crisp facets and hallmarks on the caseback. Notably, the double owl hallmarks indicate that this 18K gold watch was originally imported to France at the time of sale, and these same hallmarks can also be found on the buckle.

Maintained in the same excellent condition as when it was sold at auction in 2009, this watch has never been worn since and we are honored to present this extraordinary example once again after 16 years. The watch is accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives, confirming its production date in 1976 and its subsequent sale on August 14, 1981.

The ref. 3448 embodies the prestigious heritage of Patek Philippe's automatic perpetual calendar wristwatches and served as inspiration for the release of the ref. 5320G perpetual calendar wristwatch in 2017, showcasing strong similarities in dial design and refined elements in the case.

Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
