Catalogue Essay

When it comes to watch clubs, the Brazilian “Gondolo Gang” or “Clubs Patek Philippe” is nothing short of legendary. Iconic with their sombrero hat proudly marked with PATEK, these gentlemen whom enjoy exceptional timepieces, wine and cigar were 180 members strong when it first started. And when it comes to pioneers of creating their own “club watch”, the Gondolo Gang with their Chronometro Gondolo pocket watch would be the definition.

Named after an established Patek Philippe retailer in Rio de Janerio, the collection was a legacy between Patek Phillippe and Gondolo & Labouriau from 1872 to 1927.

Extremely well preserved and complete with its Certificate of Origin and presentation box, the present example 21-lignes Chronmetro Gondonlo is cased in the warmth of pink gold. Its hinged cuvette showcase the testament to the finest with engraved inscription “Chronometro Gondolo – Fabricado expressamente para Gondolo & Labouriau Relojoeiros – Rio de Janeiro”. The dial is in white enamel with a radial Roman numerals and sunken sub seconds dial at 6’ o clock with time indicated by a pair of elegant ink gold spade hands. Notably the wheel train were made of 9K gold instead of brass suggested to withstand temperature and humid conditions, it also features a straight-line “Moustache” lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with blued steel Breguet balance spring exclusive for Gondolo & Labouriau.

Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
