- As the second oldest model in Patek Philippe’s collection still in production after the Calatrava, the Golden Ellipse collection was born in 1968. The word “Golden” refers to the Golden Ratio, the mathematical principle formulated by the ancient Greek mathematicians, widely used in the greatest works of art and architecture in human history. Inspired by the “divine” proportions, the elliptical case is adored by collectors for its extraordinary shape which stands out from the traditional round cases.
- The present reference 5738 was introduced in 2008 for the 40th anniversary of the Ellipse collection and was designed to offer a modern interpretation of the Golden Ellipse which meets contemporary aesthetics. It was modified in its dimensions and was produced in platinum for the first time. In perfect harmony with the platinum case, the blue gold sunburst dial inside shimmers beneath the gold applied hour markers, resulting in a charming elegance that cements the Golden Ellipse as a cult classic.
