Catalogue Essay
Ref. 1480 was launched in 1940 and produced until at least 1949 in 18K yellow or pink gold like the present example. It carries a typical post-art deco modern design with its overhanging edges and lugs. Some collectors called in “twin lugs” because of its prominent twin shape lugs. It bears the tonneau-shaped calibre 9’’’90 around which Patek made most of the shape wristwatches of that time and until the 1960’s.
Like its peers, the case of the present example was made by George Croisier, a Geneva master casemaker, which can be identified by the key number 5 engraved on the caseback. He was one of the first important production case makers who made three out of four known steel ref. 1518. The present example features an ivory dial with a “shorter” signature and a doomed crystal. The applied pink gold Arabic numerals and dots for hour markers and hands are consistent with the case.
Delivered along with its Extract form the Archive, the present example is offered in excellent overall condition.
