Catalogue Essay
- 1996 was pivotal for Patek Philippe as they introduced their first annual calendar model to their catalogue. Not only is this complication more functional than a classic triple calendar wristwatch, but it is more accessible than a perpetual calendar. The annual calendar only requires to be adjusted once a year in February, when the date must be manually advanced past the 28th or the 29th to the first of March, considering it is kept running continuously.
- Boasting distinct Patek Philippe proportions, the Annual Calendar ref. 5205 was first introduced in white gold only at the turn of 2010. This mechanical marvel became an instant hit with its patented instantaneous digital date display of day, date and month, which resembles the highly important ref. 5207, Patek Philippe’s exclusive minute repeating perpetual calendar tourbillon wristwatch. All date indications on the upper quadrant of the dial advance immediately at the stroke of midnight, unlike its predecessors, where each indicator would slowly advance over the course of several hours. Thanks to its soaring popularity, the manufacturer announced the release of the pink gold variants in 2013, fitted with a black or opaline dial.
- The present timepiece is an exquisite example of a ref. 5205R-001 in pink gold, complimented by an opaline-silvered dial. Framed in a highly polished 40mm case, this reference possesses all the desired traits of a classic dress watch, flaunting a concaved bezel and a relatively thin profile that allows its wearer to slide it through any tight cuff. Adding its rarity, the present reference is the only “non-grand-complication" model that features open-worked lugs which caress the contours of its wearer’s wrist by virtue of their downturned form.
- According to research, only 4 examples of such configuration have ever surfaced the market. Offered at Phillips for the first time, the present fresh-to-the-market example is in excellent overall condition and is complete with its original accessories.
