Catalogue Essay
Introduced in 1954, the Patek Philippe ref. 2551 is the second reference to utilize the firm’s iconic self-winding cal. 12-600 AT after the ref. 2526. With a very distinctive case mimicking the looks of a flying saucer, the lugs features an elegant step. Made by master casemaker A. Wenger (identifiable via key no. 1), the reference was offered in various materials including yellow gold and pink gold with rare examples in white gold and platinum. The reference was discontinued in 1960. Throughout its production span, it is estimated that 1,100 examples of the reference were encased in yellow gold with only approximately 100 examples resurfaced to the market since.

The present example Patek Philippe ref. 2551 in yellow gold from 1955 is fitted with a rare and attractive yellow gold Gay Frères brick bracelet from the respective era and is further stamped by Patek Philippe. Immediately enhancing the value and appeal of the present example, it is also delivered with a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming the production of the present timepiece.
