Catalogue Essay
Jiro Katayama, the founder of the brand Otsuka Lotec, has gained a considerable following among discerning collectors. Despite its distribution being limited exclusively to Japan, Otsuka Lotec has garnered recognition globally for its steampunk-inspired and intriguing watch designs.

The Otsuka Lotec Model No. 6 exudes a distinct steampunk vibe, with its case featuring a straight-grained finish and a bezel secured with eight screws, reminiscent of an analog metering device akin to an air pressure gauge. The monochromatic dial housing the retrograde hands has a raw, industrial design, with exposed screws and deliberate text elements that add to the overall steampunk aesthetic.

The overall design evokes a sense of the legendary Japanese animator/manga artist Hayao Miyazaki's (宮崎駿) fantastical world, as if it were plucked from the machines in Howl's Moving Castle. With the recent nomination for the Challenge category at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) 2024, this "like-new" example of the Otsuka Lotec watch, presented for the first time in Phillips.
