Good To Know:
- Debut for Oscillon at auction
- One of a special edition of 4 pieces
- Fully handmade in-house at the Buchs atelier (exceptions are crystal, jewels, and gaskets)
- Proprietary Tensator constant force spring with hourglass shaped balance wheel
In the hushed ateliers where time itself seems to pause, the words "Fully handmade" ignites a fierce, spiritual passion among true horologists. These are not mere timekeepers churned out on production lines or refined by machines—they are living extensions of the human soul, forged from raw metal sheets and rods through endless hours of intimate, obsessive handwork. Every screw turned, every bridge filed, every surface polished by the watchmaker’s own fingers carries their heartbeat, their breath, and an unyielding pursuit of perfection where "good enough" is unthinkable. No shortcuts, no automation. Only century old machines and an endangered determination by watchmakers.
Oscillon was founded by Dominique Buser and Cyrano Devanthey in 2012, two lifelong friends whose dream ignited during a casual 1990s conversation at watchmaking school. Their paths diverged after school, yet fate wove them back together with profound purpose. Cyrano Devanthey left watchmaking studies early to join Les Ambassadeurs in Zurich, then dedicated twelve years to Omega, where he trained watchmakers and was responsible to lead the tourbillon workshop for five years such as the world’s first central tourbillon.
Dominique Buser, meanwhile, deepened his intellect through further studies in physics, only to pivot dramatically in 2005 by collaborating with Felix Baumgartner of Urwerk on the groundbreaking Harry Winston Opus 5. This pivotal project opened doors to a career in concept development and engineering at Urwerk, where innovation met relentless craftsmanship. In 2009 the two joined forces at the Urwerk R&D atelier in Buchs and was responsible for the development of the UR-100 and C3H5N3O9 together with Urwerk and MB&F. Both members of the Time Aeon Foundation which is dedicated to preserve historical watchmaking for future generations. In 2007 the foundation announced the first timepiece Naissance d’Une Montre where legends such as Philippe Dufour, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey mentors to collaboration with Michel Boulanger and achieved over one million Swiss Francs for the prototype. Announced in 2019 as the second project, the Naissance d’Une Montre 2 was lead by Oscillon and together with Greubel Forsey and Urwerk.
First released in 2016, the flagship L’Instant de Vérité (Moment of Truth) introduced groundbreaking innovations. For starters, the balance wheel is not round but a proprietary Bow-Tie / hourglass shaped structure with opposing inertia screws. Meanwhile the Tensator mainspring provides constant torque to the rest of the movement. A pair of barrels connected by an extra-long, continuous S-shaped spring that delivers perfectly constant torque throughout its unwinding, with virtually no friction and zero torque variation. Inspired by Anthony Randall’s table clock and everyday applications like modern seatbelts, this mechanism allows the spring to rotate more frequently within each barrel, resulting in an unusually long mainspring that powers the L’Instant de Vérité with an impressive 80 hours of autonomy while preserving exceptional precision and reliability.
No. 5, the present watch is cased in white gold and sized at 38mm, this L’Instant de Vérité is one of a special edition made up of 4 pieces (the number 4 was skipped). The brushed silvered dial features spiral tapisserie dial, blue accents, torque indicator and gold applied markers at 12 and 6. The movement as one should expect is finished in the most utmost beauty. In an age of CNC precision and industrial uniformity, the fully handmade watch defies efficiency: it demands patience, where a single imperfect stroke means discarding parts by the binful and embracing the "moment of truth" when human limitation confronts absolute ideal.
With a production of no more than five to ten watches annually in their workshop, each one an intimate dialogue between artisan and material. According to the brand, the calibre with a constant force spring (Tensator) were shared with only a total of 8 watches ever made on top of the prototype and unique piece Naissance d'une Montre 2. Phillips is honored to present Oscillon’s auction debut, a luminous testament that mastery demands reverence and patience
